This has reference to the news item ‘J&K get 150 more MBBS seats ‘DE July 10.
The increase in MBBS seats by 150 seats is a right step in improving the health sector in the State. The instake capacity will create more opportunities for the unemployed youth desirous of serving mankind. If one casts a cursory look around health centres located in far flung areas, one can see, most of these centres without trained doctors and are run by paramedical staff. The absence of doctors in these centres has rendered these centres ineffective. With the result, patients in these remote areas go elsewhere to seek medical attention.
In Urban Centres the situation is no better. Most of these centres remain overcrowded with patients as there are no sufficient doctors to treat them.
The doctor-patient attendants scuffles that have occured from time to time is a result of dearth of doctors. Besides, the doctor-patient ratio is also widening day by day.
To overcome this urgly situation, the Government must ensure sufficient number of doctors in these centres. By increasing the intake capacity of these colleges will certainly help in this direction.
