CHENNAI, Aug 28: The Indian Space Agency’s prestigious Mars Mission has completed 90 per cent of its journey and the Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) Spacecraft is just 27 days away from entering the Mars orbit as scheduled on September 24. Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) sources said the health of the spacecraft and the payloads were in good condition and the MOM had completed 90 per cent of its journey and it was all set to enter the Martian Orbit on September 24.
After carrying out a trajectory correction measure on September 14, the manoeuvring of the spacecraft would begin at around 0730 hrs on September 24 when the spacecraft’s speed would be reduced using the onboard liquid fuel engine from the current velocity so that the MOM enters the Mars orbit.
The sources said restarting the onboard liquid fuel engine was a challenging task as it was dormant for nearly 300 days. “Since, necessary redundancy and other measures have been incorporated in the spacecraft design, we do not foresee any problem in restarting the engine,” the sources added. The MOM, launched on November five last year using the ISRO’s workhorse launch vehicle PSLV, is now 27 days to enter the Mars orbit.
