JAMMU, Mar 8: Spokesperson of J&K BJP, Purnima Sharma today highlighted the achievements of the Modi Government in elevating the socio-economic status of women in the society.
Accompanied by Anju Dogra (secretary, J&K BJP) and Neha Mahajan (general secretary, BJP Mahila Morcha), Purnima Sharma was addressing a press conference at the Party headquarters in Trikuta Nagar, Jammu.
Purnima Sharma emphasized the landmark 33% political reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies. She also cited an improvement in the sex ratio at birth, which increased from 918 to 933, reflecting the Government’s success in combating gender discrimination.
Highlighting educational advancements, Sharma noted that nearly half of the admissions in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields are now occupied by women. Additionally, the opening of Sainik Schools and the National Defence Academy (NDA) for girls has expanded their career prospects in defence services.
She lauded the permanent commissioning of women in the Armed Forces, allowing them to serve in commanding roles. On the entrepreneurship front, Sharma pointed out that over 48% of startups have at least one woman director, bolstered by schemes like the Mudra Yojana, where around 70% of beneficiaries are women.
Focusing on rural empowerment, Sharma mentioned that more than 10 crore rural women have been mobilized through Self-Help Groups (SHGs). Maternity benefits have also been enhanced, with maternity leave extended from 12 to 26 weeks and Rs 16,500 crore distributed to 3.7 crore beneficiaries under the PM Matru Vandana Yojana.
Further, 74% of PM Awas Yojana homes are owned by women and over 10 crore kitchens are equipped with Ujjwala gas connections. Additionally, more than 15 crore households have received tap water connections under the ‘Nal se Jal’ scheme, and about 12 crore toilets have been constructed under the Swachh Bharat Mission.
Sharma also highlighted significant legal reforms, including the abolition of Triple Talaq and the provision for Muslim women to travel alone for Haj.
