NEW DELHI : Prime Minister Narendra Modi today launched a newly developed National Air Quality Index for Delhi and nine other cities through which it would be easy to know the level of pollution in the air in these cities.
The method to measure the air quality is based on six parameters represented by six colours in the index. If the air quality of a city is reflected through red colour, it would mean that the level of pollution had reached a dangerous level, but if it is reflected by green, it would mean that the air was healthy to breath in. Speaking on this occasion, the Prime Minister called upon the people to chose one day in a week on which they would not use any vehicle powered by any hydrocarbon fuel. For example, one can make Sunday a cycling day, Mr Modi said after inaugurating the National Conference of State Ministers of Environment. The new air quality index, which has been initially launched in ten cities, including the national capital, would be launched in 45 cities covering the capital of 20 states. The air quality index comes in the wake of recent reports which said the level of pollution in Delhi’s air had reached a lethal level. The Prime Minister also called for a switching off electric street lightS once in a month, on a ‘poornima’ (full moon) night. ”If urban bodies can do that it would save a great amount of energy,” he said.
