NEW DELHI, June 18: The Government of Mizoram today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India, for the implementation of BHASHINI – an AI-powered multilingual platform.
As per a statement, the MoU was signed between Amit Sharma, Secretary, ICT and Cooperation Departments, Government of Mizoram, and Amitabh Nag, CEO, Bhashini Division, MeitY, in the presence of Chief Secretary Mizoram Khilli Ram Meena and Additional Secretary MeitY Abhishek Singh at Electronics Niketan, New Delhi.
It said BHASHINI will enable real-time translation and conversion across languages through text-to-text, text-to-speech, speech-to-text, and speech-to-speech formats.
The platform supports translation from Mizo to popular Indian languages like English and Hindi and vice-versa, opening up digital services to non-Hindi and non-English speaking citizens, the statement said.
Secretary Amit Sharma said the platform would transform service delivery and governance by making it more inclusive, especially for tribal communities.
He also thanked MeitY for prioritizing Mizoram among North Eastern states for this digital initiative.
Chief Secretary Khilli Ram Meena stated that this collaboration will preserve the Mizo language while promoting digital governance and inclusivity.
Additional Secretary MeitY emphasized the need for mass outreach to promote BHASHINI’s usage in Mizoram.
He proposed organizing a state-level workshop involving ministers, students, and institutions through hackathons and quiz competitions to improve the platform’s efficiency.
The ceremony concluded with both sides exchanging the MoU and reaffirming their commitment to integrating BHASHINI across government and public platforms in Mizoram.
