Srinagar, Aug 8 Chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq today expressed anguish over the seizure of a huge quantity of “rotten, unlabelled” meat from various locations across Kashmir.
Delivering the Friday sermon at Jamia Masjid, Mirwaiz termed the incident “a grave betrayal of public trust” and “injustice against the people.”
“Feeding people haram or harmful food is zulm. It violates divine commandments, social contracts, and the law. Those involved must be strictly punished under the law without delay,” he said.
Questioning the role of enforcement agencies, he said such “large-scale malpractice” going unchecked for long was “deeply disturbing.”
“This incident has shaken the trust of the people. It is shocking that such malpractice continued for so long without being noticed. Where was the administration all this time? Its scale suggests a serious failure of regulatory oversight,” he said.
He urged authorities to ensure that no packaged meat is sold without mandatory labelling, verified cold storage details, and halal certification.
Calling the matter “far beyond health violations,” he said, “These are not just breaches of law but also of our religious principles and societal values.”
