Minor girl dies of electrocution; people hold protest

JAMMU, June 25: The family members, relatives and neighbours of a minor girl who died today due to short-circuit in an electric pole, near Kusth Ashram here at Bhagwati Nagar, today staged a protest demonstration against authorities of Power Development Department (PDD) for their alleged negligence.
According to the reports, the girl identified as Neha Kumari (12) daughter of Som Nath, a resident of Bhagwati Nagar, was going to attend nature’s call in an open land when she came in contact with an electric pole through which current was passing. In the accident, the girl received severe shock and died on the spot.
As the information of the death of the girl aired in the locality, about 70- 80 people including family members and neighbours of the deceased girl reached the spot and held a strong protest against PDD authorities.
The people raised slogans against the PDD authorities for their alleged negligence and demanded cash compensation for the family members of the deceased girl. Alleging that the girl died due to negligence of PDD field workers, they also demanded action against the concerned PDD field staff.
On getting information, senior officers of police and PDD besides concerned MLA, Sat Sharma reached the spot and pacified the protestors by assuring them that adequate compensation will be given to the family members by PDD. It was also agreed upon that the concerned DC will also provide them a compensation of Rs 50,000. Besides this, an amount of about Rs 1.5 lakh was provided on the spot to the family by making contribution from local people.
Later, the protestors dispersed and the body of the deceased was shifted to Government Medical College and Hospital, Jammu, where after conducting post mortem it was handed over to its legal heirs for last rites.
