MEXICO CITY, Feb 2: Mexico will soon send humanitarian aid to Cuba and will simultaneously continue to work through diplomatic channels on the issue of humanitarian oil supplies to the island, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced.
“This week, we plan to send humanitarian aid to Cuba with the help of the Navy Ministry – food, essential supplies, and other basic goods – while diplomatic channels resolve the issue of oil supplies for humanitarian reasons,” Sheinbaum said, speaking in Guaymas, Sonora.
The Mexican president noted that the ban on oil supplies to Cuba had been announced after her conversation with US President Donald Trump, but the issue was not discussed with him. Now her government is “seeking a solution through all diplomatic channels” because it involves “fundamentally important humanitarian aid.”
On Thursday, Trump signed an executive order authorizing the United States to impose import duties on goods from countries selling or supplying oil to Cuba, and also declared a state of emergency, citing a national security threat allegedly emanating from Havana.
The Cuban authorities previously assessed the new US measures as an attempt to stifle the country’s economy and impose extreme living conditions on the population. Havana declared them a violation of international law and the extraterritorial nature of the US sanctions. (UNI)
