SRINAGAR, Oct 2: The Meteorological Department of Srinagar today issued a weather advisory, warning that an active western disturbance is most likely to affect Jammu and Kashmir and adjoining areas from 4th October.
According to the Meteorological Centre, widespread light to moderate rain and snow at higher reaches are expected across Jammu and Kashmir between October 5 and 7, with peak activity from the night of October 5 to the morning of October 7.
“Moderate to heavy snowfall is most likely over higher reaches, including Anantnag-Pahalgam, Kulgam, Sinthan Pass, Shopian, Pir Ki Gali, Sonamarg-Zojila, Bandipora-Razdan Pass, Gulmarg, and Kupwara-Sadhna Pass,” the advisory said.
Light snow is also expected over the middle reaches, while moderate to heavy rainfall is forecast over the plains of Kashmir. “The Jammu division may witness isolated heavy to very heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, hailstorms, and strong winds reaching 40-50 kmph, gusting up to 60-70 kmph,” the advisory said.
The MET cautioned that the adverse weather may disrupt surface transport, including the Jammu-Srinagar and Srinagar-Leh National Highways, as well as other major roads in middle and higher reaches.
The MET added that there is also a likelihood of landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones in vulnerable areas. Moderate to severe thunderstorms with gusty winds may occur at several places. The advisory also warned of a rise in water levels in rivers, local streams, and nallahs, and the possibility of waterlogging in low-lying areas.
Farmers have been advised to suspend all agricultural operations during the period from October 5 to 7. The Meteorological Department has urged the administration and the public to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures to minimize inconvenience.
