MeT forecasts 3-day snowfall

SRINAGAR, Jan 19: The Meteorological Department in Srinagar today forecast three-day wet weather from tomorrow with snowfall in Kashmir.

A MeT official said that during January 20 and 21, there is a possibility of light snow at isolated to scattered places in Kashmir and light rain over the plains of Jammu.
“On January 22, there is a possibility of light to moderate rain over the plains of Jammu and snow at many places of Jammu and Kashmir. Higher reaches of erstwhile Doda district and Pir Panjal Range may also receive light to moderate snow.”
He said another spell of light to moderate rain over the plains of Jammu and snow at many places of Jammu and Kashmir is expected on January 23.
The night temperature rose at many places across the region but recorded below freezing point in Kashmir.
Srinagar had a low of -1°C recorded during the last night and this was 1.0°C above normal for the the place during the period.
Gulmarg recorded a low of -7.8°C against the -8.2°C and remained the coldest place in Kashmir. The temperature, however, was 2.4°C above normal for the ski resort for the day.
The night temperature at Pahalgam further improved and recorded at-3°C against the -3.4 °C the previous night. This was 3.3°C above normal for the place during the period.
The minimum temperature at Kupwara slipped to a low of -2.6°C today against the -1.3°C and this was still 0.3°C above normal for the place during this period of the season.
The temperature in Kokernag dropped and recorded at -3.4°C against -2.8°C the previous night and it was 0.1°C above the average for the picnic spot during the period.
The minimum temperature at Qazigund further improved and registered at -2.8°C last night against the -2.5°C a day ago and it was 0.3°C above normal for the town during the period.
Kashmir is currently in the grip of ‘Chillai-Kalan’ — the harshest period of winter. During the 40 days of ‘Chillai-Kalan’, which began on December 21, the chances of snowfall are the highest and the mercury drops considerably.
‘Chillai-Kalan’ ends on January 29, followed by a 20-day ‘Chillai-Khurd’ (small cold) and a 10-day ‘Chillai-Bacha’ (baby cold).
