NEW DELHI :  Government today said investigation was in progress in connection with a youth who was involved in running a Twitter handle on the behalf of terrorist outfit IS in Bengaluru.
However, prima facie, accused Mehdi Masroor Biswas, suggested that he has not recruited anyone for working for the IS, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said making a suo motu statement in the  Lok Sabha.
Mr Singh said the 24-year-old electronic engineer, who belonged to a Kolkata middle class family, was arrested on December 13 by the Bangalore police under section 3, 13 and 18 of the Unlawful Activities(Prevention) Act, 1967, section 66F of the IT Act and section 125 of the IPC.    The accused was arrested by the Bengaluru Police after Britain’s Channel 4 News had aired a report regarding his role in circulating IS material through a Twitter account.    Mehdi was having a Twitter account under username ‘@ShamiWitness’ and used to visit prominent IS-related sites, mostly in Arabic language and then translate the contents in English and repost the material on his Twitter  account.
