JAMMU, July 6: The All J&K Megh Sabha, under the leadership of its president Narinder Datt today voiced strong concerns over the continued lack of representation of Scheduled Caste (SC) in the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
Addressing to the media persons, Narinder Datt said, “Despite the SC community’s significant contributions across various sectors of the Government of India, they continue to face systematic exclusion in certain key areas, most notably the higher judiciary.
“Our intellectuals are serving across top positions in the country, yet we have been consistently denied representation in the Jammu & Kashmir & Ladakh High Court since its establishment in 1928,” he stated.
Datt pointed out that while many communities have seen their eligible candidates appointed to the bench, not a single judge from the SC community has ever been elevated to the High Court, despite possessing the necessary qualifications, experience and legal acumen.
“This reflects a stepmotherly treatment towards our community, which is unacceptable in a democratic setup,” he added.
Datt noted that on November 5, 2024, the Ministry of Law & Justice, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, issued directions to the Jammu & Kashmir & Ladakh High Court to ensure fair representation of SC judges in future appointments.
He urged the Chief Justice of the High Court to expedite the matter and ensure that senior-most, well-qualified and experienced departmental and session judges from the SC community are considered for elevation to the High Court bench without further delay.
Among others who were present during the press conference included Ram Lal Bhagat (Chairman advisory board), Rajinder Bhagat, Ravi Kant, Vishal Bhagat, Amar Nath, Promila Devi, Chancla Devi, Lalita Devi, Rakesh Bhagat and Anil Kumar.
