Srinagar, Jan 9: Doctors in the Valley have decided to file Public Interest Litigation in the High Court seeking ban on alcohol in Kashmir.
President Doctors Association, Kashmir, Dr Nisar-ul-Hassan in a statement said that globally the consumption of alcohol is identified as a major social evil and the constitution of India under article 47 in the Directive Principles of State policy reads: ”the State shall endeavor to bring about prohibition of the use and trade of alcohol.”
He said that because of the deleterious effects of alcohol the State Government has legal and moral obligation to impose a blanket ban on consumption and trade of alcohol.
Dr Hassan alleged that the Government is promoting use of liquor in the Valley with a design.
“The use and trade of alcohol in Kashmir is a conspiracy to make our society morbid and socially weak. The sale of liquor is unacceptable to us and at no cost will we allow this menace in our society towards which we owe a strong obligation to safeguard it against social evils,” he said.
