Srinagar, Nov 9: As Srinagar gets the UNESCO tag in its Creative Cities Network, Srinagar Mayor and Commissioner SMC today said that the move is a big honour for the city.
Addressing a press conference Srinagar Mayor, Junaid Azam Mattu said that Srinagar is known for its long and illustrious tradition of the crafts and folk art and the crafts like Pashmina Shawls, Wood Carving, Paper Mache, Kani Shawl, Sozni, Khatamband and Hand-Knitted Carpets are iconic crafts of the city.
He said the inclusion of Srinagar City in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network will further help in the development and promotion of arts and crafts.
Mattu said that there will be events, exhibitions that will highlight the achievements of the Artisans and Craftsman in month-long celebratory events.
The Mayor extended gratitude to the citizens of Srinagar City, especially, the craftsmen, artisan and artists whose hard work, as per him, has got its recognition.
He said the inclusion of Srinagar in the CCN will further pave way for the international duration and evolution of our arts and crafts.
Speaking on the occasion, Commissioner SMC Athar Amir Khan said Srinagar selected in the Crafts and Folk art Category by UNESCO as one of the cities is a proud movement for all with the efforts of various teams working jointly.
