Massive protests in Manipur against killing of children

IMPHAL, April 9: Thousands of people came out on the streets of Manipur defying curfew on Thursday to protest the killing of two children by suspected Kuki militants. Chief Minister of Manipur  Yumnam Khemchand Singh also chaired a security meeting at the Cabinet Hall of the Chief Minister’s Secretariat.

Large numbers of women carrying torch took out peaceful protest rallies tonight at various places. They shouted slogans denouncing killing of innocent children by Kuki militants and killing of three others in CRPF firing during the protests.

A mass rally was carried out by  AMUCO, MSF, Poirei Leimarol, COHR and AMAWOVA and the leaders of the organisations discussed the situation with the Chief Minister and Home Minister  K. Govindas Singh and  MLAs. Chief Minister Y Khemchand said the meeting deliberated in detail on the points raised, and the discussions were constructive and substantive.

He further noted the concerns expressed by the representatives of various communities. While the present Government has assumed office only recently, the CM called the Tronglaobi incident quite unfortunate, disrupting the peace-building efforts that were underway. The situation has been taken with utmost seriousness, the CM said.

The State Government is in continuous coordination with the  union Home Minister, Amit Shah, and all necessary measures are being undertaken to address the situation effectively. It was reiterated that the perpetrators involved in the incident would be identified and proceeded against strictly in accordance with the law, Khemchand added.

The Government remains firmly committed to maintaining law and order, restoring normalcy, and ensuring the safety and security of all citizens, he said.

Chief Minister also sought continued cooperation and support of all civil society organisations and citizens in this collective journey towards a peaceful and secure Manipur.

Later the Chief Minister convened a security meeting  attended by the Home Minister, Govindas Konthoujam, Chief Secretary, Commissioner (Home), ADGPs, IGPs, DIGs, SPs of all districts led by DGP. Some SPs who could not attend the meeting physically attended the meeting virtually.

The meeting was held in view of the security scenario arising out of the Tronglaobi incident.  Singh directed all the high-ranking civil and police officers to closely monitor the situation and make every effort to improve the law-and-order situation.

On Wednesday, the Chief Minister chaired the Combined Headquarters (Unified Command) security meeting at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat. The meeting was attended by the Home Minister, Security Advisor, Chief Secretary, Director General of Police (DGP), Manipur, 3 Corps Commander and other high-ranking officers from the Army, Assam Rifles, BSF, CRPF, ITBP, SSB as well as other central security forces and intelligence agencies.
