SRINAGAR, Mar 1: Ahead of the holy month of Ramadan, markets across Srinagar came alive today, with people busy shopping for essentials, especially dates, vegetables, and other items.
A rush of shoppers was seen at key markets such as Maharaji Bazar, Zaina Kadal, and Koker Bazar, among others in the old city, where essential items were on sale.
Excited shoppers prioritized dates-a key element of Ramadan preparations-enjoying the wider variety now available, which added to the festive shopping experience.
“When I was a kid, there used to be only two varieties of dates. But in the past few years, we’ve seen a great addition. Now, dates from different countries are available here, giving shoppers plenty of options,” said Khurshid Ahmad, a local.
Traders from Maharaji Bazar, including Suhail Ahmad, said there has been a strong response from customers who thronged the market ahead of the holy month.
“People from different parts of Kashmir come here to shop for all major occasions, and the response has been great. This market is known for selling quality products at reasonable rates,” he said. Click here to watch video
Vendors selling vegetables, chicken, and mutton also witnessed a huge rush, as people hurried to complete their preparations and reach home early.
At the same time, shoppers expressed satisfaction with the prevailing market rates but urged authorities to maintain proper oversight.
“You see, the markets are bustling, and almost everything people need is available. The rates are reasonable, but there is a need to keep an eye on things,” said another local, Muhammad Ashraf.
Besides food essentials, shops selling prayer mats, caps, and other religious items also reported an increase in customers.
Many families were seen purchasing new prayer rugs and tasbih (prayer beads), adding to the spiritual essence of Ramadan shopping.
