Many fall ill after consuming contaminated water in Kandi

RAJOURI, June 27: At least 40 patients from Dhar Sakri village of Kandi in district Rajouri were hospitalized after falling ill due to drinking contaminated water.
Official sources said that a total of 40 people have fallen ill during last two days, out of which about 8 are still under treatment in GMC Rajori hospital. They said two days ago, the health of some people of the area suddenly deteriorated and due to unknown reasons, there were complaints of diarrohea, vomiting, stomach ache and gradually the number of such people falling ill has increased. This whole matter is being told to be related to getting sick due to drinking contaminated water.
Principal, GMC Rajouri, Dr AS Bhatia informed that under the overall supervision of HOD Community Medicine, Dr Syed Shuja Qadri, a team of the Medical College visited the affected area on Friday. The team started preliminary investigation of the suspected outbreak of acute gastroenteritis after a sudden increase in gastroenteritis cases in the last 2-3 days in Dhar Sakri village of Kandi block of district Rajouri.
The team first visited CHC Kotranka where they interacted with BMO Kotranka, Dr Vinod Bhat and his team. The cluster of acute gastroenteritis cases, number of admitted patients and overall status of the cases were discussed. The GMC team also visited the affected area and temporary medical camps set up near the affected village along with the BMO and other health workers.
Dr Bhatia said the team collected data on the number of patients coming with symptoms like diarrohea and vomiting. Then the team went to the village where active cases were reported. House to house survey was also conducted to gather detailed information about water sources, symptoms and hygiene practices from households. Water samples were collected from commonly used local water sources by the Department of Microbiology and sent for laboratory analysis. He said so far a total of 40 cases have been reported with mild symptoms. There have been no deaths till date.
