RAMBAN, May 21: Former Legislator and senior leader of Aam Aadmi Party, Balwant Singh Mankotia on Saturday called for an immediate law to check the practice of contract sub-letting in Jammu and Kashmir terming it disastrous for development and public safety.
Mankotia was interacting with media persons at the site in Ramban where a massive rescue operation is going on after tunnel tragedy.
In a statement Mankotia said that from last couple of years, it has been seen that some reputed construction firms of national level got the contract for execution of development works of roads and tunnels but later these firms sublet their contract to some local contractors who many a times are found ineligible and inexperienced to execute works of such vital projects.
He called for an immediate check on this practice and demanded that a law should be there against contract sub-letting.
Mankotia termed this practice disastrous for development in Jammu and Kashmir and said that this affects quality of work as well as becomes a risk for manpower.
He also demanded a high level probe in Ramban tunnel tragedy to establish human error, if any.
“The Government should provide an immediate ex- gratia to all the victim laborers besides financial aid to the injured and free medical treatment,” Mankotia asked.
