JAMMU, Feb 1: All Jammu and Kashmir Jatt Sabha, president and former Minister, S Manjit Singh, today appealed to the Government of Jammu and Kashmir to install a majestic statue of Maharaja Ranjeet Singh.
While addressing a meeting of the Jatt Sabha, Manjit said, “He was a symbol of the undivided Punjab of which Jammu and Kashmir was a part, whereas his kingdom extended up to Lahore. His legacy must be acknowledged with the installation of a majestic statue of Maharaja Ranjeet Singh in Jammu.”
He also thanked the Government of India and Lt Governor Manoj Sinha for naming Kathua Railway Station in the memory of Late Captain Sunil Choudhary (Kirti Chakra), who made supreme sacrifice while fighting for the country.
Meanwhile, chief patron and former MP, Tarlok Singh Bajwa, said that the Government must release the pending package for the Displaced Persons (DPs).
He said that in the first installment, the Government released Rs 5.5 lakh per family, but the remaining package has not yet been released, creating panic among the DPs who are facing a financial crunch.
Former Minister Sukhnandan Choudhary also addressed the gathering, referring to the growing menace of drug addiction, which requires immediate attention from parents and the community to fight against this threat.
MLA Vikram Randhawa demanded that the Government hold a special recruitment drive for border dwellers in the Jammu region, particularly for the DPs and the Jatt community.
DDC member Taranjit Singh Tony said that the Government should consider the long-standing demands of Displaced Persons and border dwellers so that they are given compensation for land taken over by defence or Government agencies for development purposes.
Organiser of the meeting, Mandeep Choudhary, also spoke on the occasion and highlighted issues faced by the Jatt community.
