Major Somnath Sharma’s death anniversary observed

JAMMU, Nov 3: Brahman Sabha observed the death anniversary of first Param Vir Chakar Major Somnath Sharma in Raipur Domana.
On this occasion, Shakti Dutt Sharma, president of Sabha paid homage to this great personality and havan was organized in the premises of Bawa Kailakh Dev. The general secretary of Santhan Dharam Sabha, Parbhat Singh  said that the bravery of Major Somnath Sharma helped to maintain the unity of Kashmir with India.  Mahant Rohit Shastri applealed the State Government as well as Centre that airport of Jammu be named on Somanth Sharma’s name.
It may be recalled that,  Major Somnath Sharma was born on January 31, 1923 in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh in a Brahmin military family. The D Company of 4 Kumaon led by Major Somnath Sharma was air lilted to Srinagar during tribal invasion of Kashmir on October 31st, Major Sharma was under plaster due to fracture and he was advised rest but he insisted on being with his company at the crucial hour and was allowed to go. When heavy causalities adversely affected the firing power of the coy, Major Sharma with his right hand in plaster took upon himself task of filling magazines and issuing them to men operating light machine guns.
His last message to Brigade Headquarter received a few moments before he was killed “The enemy are only 50 yards from us, we are heavily outnumbered. We are under devasting fire I shall not withdraw an inch but will fight to our last man and our last round.”
Those  present were Kamal Sharma, Deepak Sharma, Rampaul Seth, Pt Dev Dutt Shastri, Rajat Soodan, Sunil Raka, Yash Seth, Suresh Sharma, Ajay Soodan and others.
