SRINAGAR, Apr 10: Police in Baramulla have foiled a major land fraud attempt in the Kunzer area, arresting seven persons who allegedly posed as land brokers and Government officials to deceive a buyer through fabricated ownership claims.
According to officials, the accused created fake documents for a 13.5 kanal land parcel at Wussan Bangil and presented one of their associates as the legitimate owner.
To make the deal appear authentic, one accused impersonated a Patwari while others posed as revenue officials, forming what police described as a pre-planned conspiracy.
The fraud surfaced after the complainant, Abdul Ahad Malik of Shalteng, approached police.
Preliminary inquiry, as per police, revealed that he had already paid Rs 4.10 lakh and was being pressured to arrange an additional Rs 20 lakh.
Timely police intervention, however, prevented further financial loss.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Gh Mohammad Wani (posing as Patwari), Masood Ahmad Wani, Md Yousuf Wani, Md Abdullah Mir, Bilal Parray, Fayaz Ahmad Khanday and Riyaz Ahmad Mir.
Police said forged revenue documents linked to multiple Khasra numbers were seized during the operation.
An FIR (No. 42/2026) has been registered at Police Station Kunzer, and further investigation is underway to identify additional accomplices and uncover the broader network.
