JAMMU, Mar 30: In a significant push to strengthen dental education and specialist healthcare in Jammu and Kashmir, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has approved a two-fold increase in Postgraduate (MDS) seats at the Indira Gandhi Government Dental College (IGGDC), Jammu, raising the annual intake from 14 to 28 for the 2026-27 academic session.

The decision marks a major expansion of postgraduate training capacity at the premier dental institution in the Jammu region and is expected to widen access to advanced dental education while strengthening tertiary oral healthcare services.
The MDS programme at IGGDC Jammu was launched in 2020 with an intake of two students each across seven specialties. The first batch secured recognition in January 2024, paving the way for further expansion. With the latest approval, the intake has now been enhanced to three seats in multiple specialties, alongside additional seats in select disciplines.
According to official Letters of Intent and subsequent Letters of Permission issued by the Ministry, the increase covers key specialties including Prosthodontics and Crown & Bridge, Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Periodontology, and Oral Pathology and Microbiology.
The approval has been granted under Section 10(A) of the Dentists Act, 1948, and will remain subject to annual renewal based on compliance with prescribed norms, including infrastructure, faculty strength, clinical workload, and academic benchmarks. Authorities have made it clear that any deviation from stipulated conditions, particularly in admissions, will invite action under the relevant provisions of the Act.
Officials said the expansion will significantly reduce the outflow of dental graduates from the Union Territory in search of postgraduate seats, while simultaneously enhancing the availability of specialized dental care within the region. The move is also aligned with the Centre’s broader push to scale up medical and dental education capacity across the country.
With the intake set to double, IGGDC Jammu is poised to emerge as a stronger hub for advanced dental training, contributing both to human resource development and improved patient care standards in J&K.
