SRINAGAR, Sept 27: Army today foiled a major infiltration bid in Keran sector of the frontier district of Kupwara and captured one of the biggest arms and ammunition consignments from the infiltrators in the recent years near the Line of Control (LoC).
An army spokesman of Srinagar based 15-Corps said here today that Army troops noticed the movement of 2-3 infiltrators near the LoC in Keran sector of Kupwara early this morning. He didn’t rule out the presence of more infiltrators as the area where from they were infiltrating has deep gorges and very difficult terrain.
The spokesman said infiltrators were challenged and fired upon by the Army but they managed to flee back to Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK). He said that the infiltrators also fired back and firing continued for several hours. He said that while fleeing back the infiltrators left behind six gunny bags.
After the search of the area, Army said that they recovered huge cache of arms and ammunition that was kept in six gunny bags. The recovered arms and ammunition include 10 AK-47 Rifles with 20 magazines, 98 Chinese made pistols (.30 mauser) with 196 magazines and two Sub Machine Guns (.30 Cal, folding Butt) with four magazines.
The spokesman said that all these weapons were Chinese make, wrapped in Chinese newspapers and entire package material used was also Chinese. “All the weapons were secured with packing tape and were brand new”, he added.
The spokesman said that by this recovery, Army averted a major tragedy. He said that it is a major success towards combating terrorism, achieved due to the commitment, grit and vigil with which Army is operating on the LoC.
The spokesman said: “It is our adversary’s design to push in maximum number of terrorists, weapons and other warlike stores before the winters to give a boost to terrorism and disturb peace and stability in the Valley.”
He added that Army is maintaining total vigil and domination along the LoC and is fully prepared to foil all such evil designs of the adversary. “Army is fully committed in maintaining peace and stability in the Valley”, the spokesman added.
It may be mentioned here that Army this month launched major offensive against the recently infiltrated militants in Handwara forests of Kupwara and Uri forests of Baramulla.
The operation in Haril forests of Handwara is still going on and so far two militants including top LeT commander were killed. The Army sources said that it was a group of 7-8 militants that they have trapped in Handwara forests.
Army had also trapped another group of recently infiltrated militants in Uri forests near the LoC in the middle of this month killing two militants of the group including LeT commander. The operation lasted for about 10 days and was called off after rest of the militants of the group fled from the Army cordon.
