SRINAGAR, Jan 1: Jammu and Kashmir Mahila Congress president Shameema Raina today demanded justice in the Unnao rape case and the Asifa case, accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of failing to protect women despite its public slogans.
Addressing a press conference here, Raina said the Unnao case involved the rape of a minor girl and the alleged killing of her family members. She alleged that the accused, BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, raped the minor, after which the victim’s father died in police custody.

Raina further claimed that two members of the victim’s family were critically injured in a suspicious truck accident, while the girl’s lawyer was also killed. She said these incidents raised serious questions about the safety of the victim and her family during the course of the legal battle.
“The minor girl showed immense courage by pursuing the case in court,” Raina said. She added that the accused was initially sentenced to life imprisonment, but later another court ordered his release. “After this decision, the victim’s mother was compelled to sit in protest at India Gate to seek justice,” she said.
Raina alleged that while several political leaders had expressed solidarity with the victim’s family, the BJP had failed to issue any official statement. “This silence raises serious questions about the party’s commitment to women’s safety,” she said.
The Mahila Congress leader also demanded justice in the Asifa case, stating that crimes against women cannot be addressed selectively. “The BJP repeatedly talks about ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’, but the reality on the ground is very different,” she said, alleging that women continue to feel unsafe.
Raina said the Mahila Congress would continue to raise its voice and intensify its campaign until justice is delivered in both the Unnao and Asifa cases.
