UDHAMPUR, Apr 24: Local villagers of Pattla have demanded repair and restoration of heritage stepwell, which their ancestors left behind as a legacy that continues to echo through the ages.
This stepwell, located near Krimachi, just 4-5 kilometers from Pattla and 10 kilometers from Udhampur town, bears testimony to the times when Dogra kings journeyed to Kashmir, often staying enroute at Krimachi, the then capital of the Bhuti Dynasty.
The stepwell at Pattla is believed by locals to have been built during the reign of Maharaja Gulab Singh and Maharaja Ranbir Singh, both known for their contributions to infrastructure and cultural development.
Despite the passage of time, this stepwell remains structurally sound and continues to reflect the craftsmanship of a bygone era. However, the beauty and strength of this heritage site are slowly being threatened. Overgrown weeds and grass have taken root inside and around the stepwell, which, if left unchecked, could damage the structure and render it irreparable.
Due to this stepwell being open, there is a fear of someone falling inside it. Locals have appealed to the district administration Udhampur to repair it and cover it properly so that no accident happens.
“This situation calls for urgent attention. The concerned authorities are earnestly requested to take immediate steps for the repair and restoration of this historical treasure. Minor repair work and regular maintenance can go a long way in preserving this cultural asset for future generations. Let us act before time erases another chapter of our heritage,” they said.
