JAMMU, Nov 6: Intensifying drive to curb the malpractices by unscrupulous traders to cheat the gullible consumers especially on the eve of upcoming festivals, Department of Legal Metrology conducted extensive checking of the market in and around Jammu city.
More than 340 establishments were checked in Bakshi Nagar, Residency Road, Amphalla, Janipur, Talab Tillo and other areas and 80 traders dealing with sweets, furnishing items, provisional stores, bakery, toys, ration dealers and business activities were booked.
According to Deputy Controller Legal Metrology Enforcement, Manoj Prabhakar, team of the officers headed by Inspector Pooja and Inspector Rohit conducted inspection of hardware stores for checking the rates of hardware items including tiles, bathroom fittings. The team found many of the items without marking MRP which is mandatory as per the provisions of law for the information of the consumers.
Eight sweet shops were booked for indulging in selling sweets to the consumers by weighing the container box along with sweets thereby delivering less in weight by 100 grams against 1 kilograms of sweets. The shopkeepers were directed to display prominently that weight of the container is not weighed along with sweets and consumers were advised to take net quantity.
Keeping hawk’s eye on the practices of charging extra price, the team enforced the rates fixed by Director CA&PD on bakery items and 6 bakery shops were booked for overcharging. The team also ensured that ration dealers deliver accurate ration to the consumers and 11 dealers were booked for different violations.
