JAMMU, Nov 29: Legal Metrology Department under the supervision of Shiv Kumar Gupta, Controller Legal Metrology, has imposed penalties totalling Rs 3.15 lakh for violations related to packaging declarations, labelling norms and e-commerce consumer information requirements across the Union Territory.
The enforcement teams in Jammu found major lapses in the labelling of tiles being manufactured. The products were being sold without essential declarations such as MRP, Net Quantity, PKD, Unit Sale Price, along with incomplete product details and improper font size in clear violation under Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011. Three firms accepted the notices and paid Rs 1,65,000 as compounding fees.
In Kashmir, the Consumer Protection Wing Srinagar initiated action against the two leading manufacturers for irregular declarations on pre-packaged goods sold on Amazon and other e-commerce platforms. Online surveillance revealed missing consumer details, incorrect numerals and incomplete disclosures on food and general commodities. Both firms opted for compounding, resulting in Rs 1,50,000 as penalty.
With both divisions included, the total amount realized stands at Rs 3.15 lakh, reflecting the department’s firm resolve to uphold transparency, fair trade and accountability in both online and offline markets.
