Srinagar, May 3: Director SKIMS, Prof. M. Ashraf Ganie today visited the Skill Development Centre (SDC) to review the ongoing Basic Life Support (BLS) training program, calling for mandatory life-saving training for all employees.
During the visit, Prof. Ganie observed hands-on sessions that focus on high-quality chest compressions, use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs), and emergency management of choking cases.
He lauded the faculty for delivering structured BLS and Cardiac Life Support courses through simulation-based modules that, he said, enhance both the competence and confidence of participants in high-pressure situations.
“Equipping every employee with basic life support skills will not only improve in-hospital response but also enable staff to act as first responders in emergency settings,” Prof. Ganie said.
Stressing the need for institutional preparedness, he directed the Faculty In-Charge of the SDC to ensure that all SKIMS staff undergo BLS training.
He further emphasized the importance of such programs in enabling healthcare professionals to effectively respond to cardiac arrests and other life-threatening emergencies, both within hospital premises and in public spaces.
“With this initiative, SKIMS aims to build a culture of readiness and responsiveness that extends beyond the walls of the hospital,” he added.
Since its inception, the Skill Development Centre has trained over 650 postgraduate students, residents, paramedics, and nursing students in life-saving protocols.
Prof. Ganie also instructed the concerned departments to upgrade the centre’s infrastructure and revealed that plans are underway to establish a state-of-the-art Simulation Laboratory.
The upgraded facility will introduce advanced training modules including Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), Neonatal Advanced Life Support (NALS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
