Leh, July 8: All business establishments in Leh observed a complete shutdown today in response to a bandh call given by the Merchant Association Leh, protesting against what they termed as unfair business practices by certain traders that threaten the interests of local retailers. Merchant Association Leh has warned to continue the bandh untill a solution is found by the administration to the issues it is raising.

The Association, led by its President Tsering Angchuk, submitted a formal complaint to the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Leh during a meeting held earlier in the day. The delegation raised serious concerns about the operations of Mir Sales Cooperation, alleging that the entity is undermining the local economy by selling goods at prices far below market rates.
“We are witnessing a business model that resembles a scam. This is not about locals versus non-locals. It is about protecting the future of small and local businesses in Ladakh,” said Angchuk, while addressing media after the meeting. He alleged that similar business activities by the same operator have caused disruptions in other regions such as Himachal, Kargil, and Srinagar. “We met Mir and suggested he operate only as a wholesaler, but he continues to retail items at unreasonably low prices – for instance, a pillow cover being sold for just Rs 12,” he added.
The Merchant Association had earlier submitted a warning letter to the district administration on June 28, urging authorities not to grant a license to the trader, citing potential damage to Ladakh’s local market. “Despite our repeated appeals, no concrete action has been taken,” Angchuk said.
In its complaint, the Association also named Haider Hashimi, a local trader whose business is registered under Ladakh Furniture, but who is allegedly dealing in furnishing, electronic, and hardware products beyond the scope of his registration. The Association warned him to limit his trade practices within the permitted scope of his business.
The traders’ body further raised objections over the growing number of Super Marts being opened across Leh, arguing that the town’s population does not justify such expansion. They also demanded that Labor Registration be permitted only after a valid Merchant Registration is obtained.
The shutdown received widespread support from local traders, with commercial activity coming to a standstill throughout the day. The Merchant Association has urged the district administration to take immediate action to safeguard the interests of local businesses and maintain fair market practices in the region.
