Leh once again creates Guinness World record

LEH, Oct 29: The inhabitants of this cold desert area today once again created Guinness World Record by planting over 99,000 saplings in 53 minutes.
In 2010, the inhabitants of Leh broke the Guinness Record of Philippines by planting over 53,000 saplings of willow. However, in 2011 the Philippines created another record by planting 64,091 saplings in one hour.
Considering it as a challenge, the Live to Love Organization decided to once again create Guinness World record and accordingly the people of the district were informed and Tunkey-Lato (Changa) area of the district was selected.
Today, 99,013 saplings of willow were planted under the banner of Live to Love Foundation in 53 minutes with the help of 9814 persons to create new Guinness World Record. People from various parts of the district participated in planting saplings. The enthusiasm to break the Guinness Record of Philippines can be gauged from the fact that tools being used in planting saplings were brought by the people on their own.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chairman of Live to Love Organization, Gyalwang Drukpa highlighted the importance of planting trees for safeguarding the nature and environment. He urged the people to plant trees as much as possible in other areas of Ladakh in order to contribute for protection of environment and ecology in the wake of growing threats of global warming.
The Chief Executive Councilor, Rigzin Spalbar, while addressing the people, said, “the participants deserve applaud as they have planted saplings in most hard surface”, adding “this place was chosen for planting willow saplings keeping in view the availability of water source”.
Executive Councilor Health, Dr Sonam Wangchuk, Executive Councilor Tourism, Gyurmet Dorjey, Executive Councilor Agriculture, Sonam Dorjey, Deputy Commissioner, Leh Tsering Angchok and Superintendent of Police Leh, Vivek Gupta, were also present on the occasion.
