LEH, July 23: In a bid to stop the spread of misinformation, the District Magistrate of Leh, Romil Singh Donk, has imposed a ban on sharing fake news, rumours, and unverified content on social media platforms across the district.
The order, issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, came into effect today and will remain in force for two months or until further notice.
The action followed concerns about individuals and groups using platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Telegram to spread false information, which could disturb public order.
As per the directive, no person is allowed to create, circulate, or forward fake or misleading content.
Social media group administrators have been asked to monitor their groups, delete any objectionable material immediately, and switch their groups to “Admin Only” mode to restrict the spread of rumours.
The District Magistrate has warned that strict legal action will be taken against anyone found violating the order.
“The order, issued ex-parte, aims to safeguard public peace and maintain law and order in the district,” stated the District Magistrate.
