Legal Metrology imposes Rs 50000 penalty on 2 Mustard Oil Mills

KATHUA, Sept 15: A team of Legal Metrology Department conducted inspection of various brands of mustard oils at M/S Madan Lal and Sons ,a wholesale dealer at Gurha Mundian tehsil – Hiranagar Kathua.
During course of inspection (net contents determination process) it was found that Mustard Oil filled in one litre bottles of brand name Mashal, Satyam and Jyoti Kiran was less in quantity as mentioned on the bottles. Taking strong cognizance of the same Inspector, LMD, Dayalachak, Devi Lakhanpuria registered cases under Section 36(2) Legal Metrology Act 2009 against the manufacturers/packers of Mustard Oil.
Subsequently, the matter was taken up by the Department with M/S Shree GRG Oil Mills, Shree Ganga Nagar Rajasthan manufacturer of ” Satyam” brand Mustard Oil and M/S Goal Vegetable Oil Ltd. Kota, Rajasthan manufacturer of “Jyoti Kiran ” brand mustard oils, which in turn admitted the lapses on their part and applied for compounding of the case at the departmental level. Ultimately the Assistant Controller Legal Metrology Kathua, Kuldeep Raj imposed and recovered Rs. 50000 penalty (25000 each) from both the manufacturer/packer of Mustard oil.
Notice was served to the “Mashal “brand manufacturer M/s Khandelia Oil and General Mills Shri Ganga Nagar, Rajasthan for further Legal Action under Legal Metrology Act 2009.
All the under weight volume bottles of Mustard oil were returned back to the manufacturers for refilling before being supplied to the consumers.
Further traders dealing in the packaged articles were advised by the Department to make sure that packaged items offered for sale must bear the mandatory declarations like name of the commodity in the package, address of the manufacturer /packer/importer, net quantity in weight /measure /number, retail sale price, month and year of the manufacturer /packing, consumer care number etc.
