SRINAGAR, Apr 16: A legal awareness programme focusing on domestic violence, property rights, and workplace discrimination was organized today at Government Degree College (GDC) Sumbal by the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Bandipora in coordination with Tehsil Legal Services Committee (TLSC) Sumbal.
The event held under the directions of the J&K Legal Services Authority, was organized under the chairmanship of Khalil Ahmad Choudhary, Chairman DLSA (Principal District and Sessions Judge) Bandipora, and under the guidance of Iqbal Ahmad Akhoon, Secretary DLSA (Chief Judicial Magistrate) Bandipora.
Choudhary inaugurated the event in the presence of Shabeena Iqbal Shawl, Principal GDC Sumbal; Molvi Muzaffar Hussain, Chief Administrative Officer District Court Bandipora; Assistant Professors of the college and other dignitaries.
The programme commenced with an introductory address by Dr Nuzhat Gul (Assistant Professor), who highlighted the importance of raising public awareness on legal issues. Dr Shabeena Iqbal Shawl delivered the welcome address.
Advocate Irshad Ahmad Dar, Panel Lawyer TLSC Sumbal, elaborated on the seriousness of domestic violence and its emotional, physical, and psychological impacts. He stressed the need for community education and support systems to break the cycle of abuse.
Advocate Aabid Hussain Malla, also a Panel Lawyer of TLSC Sumbal, spoke on the significance of property rights in ensuring individual freedom and economic empowerment, emphasizing equal access for all, regardless of gender or background.
In his address, Khalil Ahmad Choudhary called for a united stand against workplace and societal discrimination faced by women. He urged the audience to challenge outdated norms and promote gender equality through education, awareness, and participation.
The event saw participation from faculty members, students of GDC Sumbal, Panel Lawyers, Para Legal Volunteers (PLVs), and officials of TLSC Sumbal. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Shumila Nazir, Assistant Professor at GDC Sumbal.
