NEW DELHI, July 20:
Left parties today accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of not keeping his promise of giving a “corruption-free” government, and staged nation-wide protests seeking action against senior BJP leaders for their alleged role in Lalit Modi row, Vyapam scam and other controversies.
“On completion of one year of his Government, Modi had boasted that no corruption case surfaced during the period. But, we told them to wait as there were no corruption charges against UPA government too until sixth or seventh year.
“But even before the NDA government could complete a year, we got to see so many scams coming out. Modi had promised a corruption-free government, but it has been failed so early,” CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury said while addressing the protesters here.
Yechury reiterated the stand of Left parties that senior BJP leaders involved in Lalit Modi controversy like External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje should step down from their respective post until the matter was being probed.
Terming Vyapam scam as a “deadly combination of crime and corruption”, the Rajya Sabha member said Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan too should be removed from his post until a court-monitored CBI probe was over in the matter.
On Modi allegedly keeping quiet over the corruption charges, Yechury took a dig at the Prime Minister of turning “Maunendra Modi”.
“He would poke at previous Prime Minister Manmohan Singh calling him Maunmohan Singh for not speaking up. Now the otherwise outspoken Modi, is keeping silence on the corruption charges against his Government. He has become Maunendra Modi,” Yechury quipped.
Yechury also criticised Modi for not bringing the black money back as promised by BJP during 2014 Lok Sabha poll campaigning and took a dig at the BJP leader for his “unprecedented number” of foreign visits to 22 countries until now.
Earlier, CPI national secretary D Raja slammed the Modi Government over the charges and pressed for strong action in the matters.
Besides Yechury and Raja, CPI(M) politburo members Brinda Karat and Hannan Mollah, AI Forward Bloc leader Debabrata Biswas, Abani Roy from RSP, Satywan of SUCI, Kavita Krishnan of All India Progressive Women’s Association and others took part in the protests which were held simultaneously in other parts of the country.
