Leh, Nov 6: The Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA) and the Ladakh Gonpa Association (LGA) jointly addressed a press conference here today to express concern over the prevailing situation in Ladakh.
LBA President Chering Dorjay Lakrook announced that an important General Council meeting will be convened in Leh on November 9 to discuss the current developments, particularly the arrest and delayed release of several LBA members, including the Vice President, Youth President, and Women President.
Dorjay alleged that the torture and harassment of LBA members amounted to an attack on the Buddhist community by the administration. He further condemned the alleged intimidation and beating of Nambardars (Goba) by the authorities, describing it as an assault on Ladakh’s cultural identity.
The LBA and LGA have jointly appealed to the public to offer prayers on the 49th-day observation of the martyrs on November 11 in all village gonpas. In Leh, a large prayer assembly will be held at the Dharma Centre, Dorjay informed.
He also announced the launch of a crowdfunding initiative to support those injured in the September 24 firing incident, many of whom require prolonged medical treatment and come from underprivileged families.
Responding to media queries, Dorjay added that one kanal of land each has been handed over by the LBA in Leh to the next of kin of the martyrs.
