SRINAGAR, Dec 14: The widening of the road leading to Lassipora Industrial Growth Centre (IGC), which is considered one of the most thriving industrial regions in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district, is awaiting official approval with unit holders terming the project vital for the growth of the region.
The unit holders at the Industrial Estate told Excelsior that the road project will play a critical role in traffic management, allowing heavy vehicles to drive freely from NH44 to IGC Lassipora.
“Heavy vehicles that are larger in size find it difficult to move on the road since it is too narrow for them. It would allow drivers to move around more easily and enhance traffic management on the stretch, “a unit owner said, adding that a wide road is needed now more than ever as the industrial park is growing with each passing day.
The Road and Buildings Department, which has been tasked with carrying out the widening work, maintained that the work on the “much-needed project” is awaiting an administrative nod from the Government.
“We have prepared a detailed project report for the project and sent it to the government for approval. The work will commence soon after the Government gives its approval”, Nissar Ahmad, Executive Engineer, Roads and Buildings Department for Pulwama, told Excelsior.
While highlighting the project’s importance, he said that the road would aid in the smooth circulation of vehicles towards the IGC Lassipora and the district headquarters.
Another official with knowledge of the issue informed the Excelsior that the route was being built in tandem with another road, Pulwama-Awantipora, with the goal of improving traffic in the area within two years. “The projects were necessary owing to the increased vehicle density on these roadways. Both roads have an average density of 3800 Commercial Vehicles Per Day (CVPD). The roads are critical for both local and business purposes, ” an official said, adding that they have no information about Pulwama- Awantipora.
According to the locals, both routes would increase the area’s business by boosting heavy truck mobility, as the road, in addition to heading to the Lassipora Industrial Estate, also intersects with the Mughal road. “The road would improve traffic flow not only to and from the industrial estate but also to and from other areas that are impacted by estate traffic. It will also reduce Mughal road traffic in the area”, Bashir Ahmad, a local businessman.
