Srinagar June 24: National Conference (NC) Member of Parliament (MP) Mian Altaf Ahmad today said the absence of Statehood in Jammu and Kashmir has created a climate of uncertainty that should not exist and called on the Government to function effectively within its jurisdiction to resolve people’s grievances.

Speaking at a cultural event organized by the Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages at Tagore Hall in Srinagar, Altaf said, “There are difficulties. Because there is no Statehood, there is definitely an environment of uncertainty. That should not happen. But it is also necessary that those who are in power should work and should assert their authority.”
He added that it is important for citizens to identify the root of the problem. “People should know who is creating difficulties-whether it is the bureaucracy or someone else-so they get a clear picture of the situation.”
On the deteriorating health of jailed separatist leader Shabir Shah, Altaf strongly advocated for his release. “I have received a letter from his family regarding his health. At this age and in this condition, he should not be kept under house arrest. Even if not in Kashmir, he should at least be allowed to stay in Delhi, close to his family.”
The MP praised the Cultural Academy for holding the programme in a public space after years of holding events only at its Srinagar office. “Our Gujjar community lives in every block and school of Jammu and Kashmir. This community has produced great poets, writers, and intellectuals. Such programmes help the younger generation learn about their legacy,” he said.
Altaf pointed out that the Cultural Academy’s Srinagar wing had been silently shut. “Earlier, ten people worked in this department; now only three are left, and all are posted in Jammu. People should know where the problems lie and what forums to approach for redressal,” he added.
Addressing the upcoming Amarnath Yatra, the veteran leader expressed hope. “The people are cooperating with the administration. The administration should also maintain communication with locals, as nothing can be achieved without their support,” he said. While recalling his own experience managing the yatra during his tenure as MLA since 1987, he said, “Even in difficult times after 1996, the yatra was successful. Today, the situation is better.”
On the ceasefire issue between Iran and Israel, Altaf said, “There is no doubt there is oppression, and the world is condemning it. We all want bloodshed to stop. Human lives should not be lost. But I cannot speak on behalf of the two countries involved.”
