Labourer drowns crossing Birma Nallah

UDHAMPUR, July 29: In a tragic incident, a poor labourer drowned while crossing Birma Nallah here today as the bridge is damaged and lying closed.
The deceased was identified as Panjabu Ram (55), son of Amroo, resident of Sansu in Birma, Udhampur. While crossing the Nallah, his feet slipped from the rock and he fell into deep water. Before the locals and Police could reach the spot, he had drowned.
Pertinent to mention that Birma Bridge has been completely closed for movement of vehicles as well as pedestrians after a major portion of its approach road caved- in again a day after the damaged part was filled up with earth and stones.
In view of movement restriction over the bridge even for pedestrians, locals are forced to cross the Nallah for reaching their destinations.
Meanwhile, a young woman was rescued when she was caught in flash flood in the middle of Tawi river in Darsoo area of Udhampur district. The woman, namely Parveen Akhtar (30), wife of Akram of Duddar had gone to Tawi area when water level in the river suddenly increased.
The rescue operation was launched by Police and SDRF team with the help of locals, who evacuated the woman and shifted her to District Hospital Udhampur as she had sustained minor injuries.
