KATHUA, Oct 11: In a bid to promote welfare and awareness among the working community, the Labour Department, Jammu and Kashmir, today organised a mega event titled “Shram Utsav” at the Government Degree College Auditorium, Kathua.
The programme, themed “Awareness, Empowerment and Workers’ Rights,” aimed to educate and empower workers about their entitlements and social security benefits.
The event witnessed participation of over 300 workers from organised, unorganised, and construction sectors across the district.
Labour Commissioner, J&K, Charandeep Singh attended the event as the Chief Guest, along with other departmental officers.
The programme began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp, followed by a welcome address by Assistant Labour Commissioner Kathua, Piyusha Khajuria, who reaffirmed the department’s commitment to ensuring social and economic security for workers through effective implementation of welfare schemes.
A street play titled “Shram Ka Samman – Har Haath Ko Adhikar” was performed, highlighting the importance of labour dignity and workers’ rights.
Over 150 workers were registered under the J&K Building and Other Construction Workers (BOC) Welfare Board, while 80 others were enrolled in social security schemes like PMJJBY, PMSBY, and PMSYM through on-spot registration stalls.
Workers also shared personal stories of how departmental interventions helped transform their lives.
Nirmala Kumari, whose husband was injured at work, received Rs 7.5 lakh compensation under the Employee Compensation Act, while Napul Singh shared that her family received Rs 5 lakh under the Death Assistance Scheme after her father’s demise.
During the event, financial assistance worth Rs 29.81 lakh was distributed among 495 registered construction workers under the Education Assistance Scheme.
Three meritorious students of registered workers were also given Rs 50,000 each under the Meritorious Student Award Scheme, and Rs 5 lakh was provided to a family as compensation under the Employee Compensation Act.
A felicitation ceremony was also held to honour exemplary workers for their contribution to a safe work culture.
Addressing the gathering, Labour Commissioner Charandeep Singh praised the efforts of the Kathua team for effectively implementing welfare measures.
He stressed the need to spread awareness among workers and ensure that the benefits of labour welfare schemes reach every household.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Assistant Labour Commissioner Piyusha Khajuria.
