Leh, Nov 19: Former Minister and co-chairman of the Leh Apex Body, Chering Dorjay, who has returned from the national seminar on Sixth Schedule held in Assam last week, said it was a great learning experience for representatives from Ladakh since knowledge gained from the seminar would help them better prepare for the upcoming meeting between the Leh Apex body and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on December 3.

Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, along with a team from the Leh Apex Body, including Chering Dorjay, Jigmet Paljor, and Haji Mustafa, attended a two-day national seminar on the impact of the Sixth Schedule in Northeast India, held at Diphu in Karbi Anglong district of Assam.
The seminar was organized by the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council in collaboration with the Centre for Karbi Studies (CKS), Diphu, and the Department of Political Science at Assam University’s Diphu campus. Sonam Wangchuk was the chief guest at the event.
Dorjay told the Excelsior that it was particularly beneficial for the Ladakhi representatives, who have been advocating for the implementation of the Sixth Schedule in Ladakh to safeguard its distinct cultural identity and fragile ecology.
“It was a great learning experience for us, especially from people in Assam who have firsthand experience with the Sixth Schedule’s implementation over the past 75 years,” Dorjay said. He added that the knowledge gained from the seminar would help them better prepare for the upcoming meeting between the Apex-KDA and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on December 3, where Ladakh’s issues will be discussed.
Dorjay also mentioned that he would propose a joint meeting of the Apex-KDA soon to better prepare for the MHA meeting. He cautioned the people of Leh and Kargil to stay away from statements and opinions from certain individuals whose motives could be to create a rift between the two regions, and to destabilize the smooth process of the proposed talk.
In response to a question about the BJP raising objections to some Kargil leaders visiting Omar Abdullah in Srinagar, Dorjay stated that he saw no issue with Kargil leaders meeting their party leaders. “I haven’t heard of anything being discussed that should concern us. There are leaders from different political parties in both the Leh Apex Body and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), and I find nothing wrong in meeting their party leaders,” he said.
