SRINAGAR, Feb 18: Kashmir University has allegedly violated the government’s reservation policy by appointing a candidate from the unreserved category to an Assistant Professor position reserved for the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) in the Media Education and Research Centre (MERC)
According to a representation available with Excelsior, a concerned candidate has alleged that the university disregarded reservation norms in the selection of an Assistant Professor in Mass Communication and Journalism.
The candidate, who applied under the EWS category as per Advertisement Notice No. 13 of 2023, claims that despite meeting all eligibility criteria, the reserved post was awarded to a candidate from the Un-Reserved (UR) category.
The selection process, which included an interview on December 16, 2024, was for two positions-one for UR and the other for EWS. However, the complainant alleges that the EWS-designated seat was wrongfully given to a UR candidate, violating the Government of India’s reservation policy (OM No. 36039/1/2019-Estt (Res)), which prohibits such allocations if eligible EWS candidates are available.
The candidate, who holds a master’s degree in Mass Communication & Journalism with a 9 CGPA, is UGC-NET and SET qualified, and has research publications in SCOPUS-indexed journals, argues that this appointment violates UGC regulations and Ministry of Education guidelines on fair representation in teaching positions.
Calling the decision discriminatory, the candidate has demanded an immediate review of the selection process, a stay on the appointment, and the rightful allocation of the EWS seat. The complainant has also threatened legal action if the university fails to address the grievance.
Despite multiple attempts, Vice Chancellor Nelofar Khan did not respond to queries.
