According to an order issued by the Joint Registrar (Teaching Wing) on August 14, Dr. Manzoor Ahmad Mir, Associate Professor, Department of Bioresources, was relieved of his charge as Head of Department “with immediate effect.”
The order stated that Dr Riyaz ul Rehman, Assistant Professor, will function as Coordinator of the Department until further directions.
University officials said the enquiry committee, constituted by the Vice Chancellor and headed by the Dean of Academic Affairs, included the Dean of Research, Dean of College Development, Dean of the School of Biological Sciences, and the Joint Registrar General Administration (teaching wing).
The committee held several meetings after receiving complaints from research students regarding alleged misconduct by Dr. Mir and, in its final meeting on August 14, unanimously recommended his removal.
One member even suggested suspension, officials said. “The decision was taken in the best interest of the department and students, and the charge was handed over to the next senior faculty member,” an official said.
Students and parents have welcomed the move. “I feel relieved with the decision. His presence and exploitation were taking a toll on the mental health of our children,” said a parent.
Students also urged the University not to assign him administrative responsibilities in the future.
