Srinagar, Aug 8: After the exams for the posts of Registrar and Assistant Controller were repeatedly delayed, the interview process for the shortlisted candidates has now been halted by Kashmir University, leaving them in despair.
The shortlisted candidates informed the Excelsior that stopping the interviews would further extend the recruiting process, which has already taken 3 years due to the University administration’s slack attitude.
“The University administration is further delaying the process rather than accelerating it to make up for the time lost filling the positions that should have taken one year instead of three,” a candidate said, adding that this official indifference is impeding all Government efforts to address the unemployment problem, and they need to be called out on it.
The candidates complained that the University administration had taken a slow-moving strategy to fill the post from the start. For unknown reasons, they said, the positions were initially advertised in 2015 and then again in 2019. “Preliminary exams were held in Aug 2021, and the main exams were delayed twice for arbitrary reasons before being held on March 23, 2022,” they said.
They said on June 20, 2022, three months after the main exams had ended, and in response to repeated protests, the results of the exams were made public. “Since then, more than one month has passed, and no shortlisting for interviews has been done,” they said.
The candidates said that despite numerous attempts to raise the issue with the University, they never received an appropriate answer. “Despite repeated contacts with the Registrar’s office, Controller’s office, Private Secretary to the VC office and director of competitive exams office, no proper reason for the delay in the interview has been confirmed. The worst part is that officials listen to our complaints with utter disdain and inform us not to contact them,” they said.
The candidates threatened to launch an indefinite hunger strike if the interview process is not initiated. “The University is playing with our patience and our futures while taking us for a ride. “We are forced to go on a hunger strike outside the University’s gates in order to pressure the institution into ensuring that our three-year recruitment process ends on an honorable note,” they said.
Dr Nissar Ahmad, Registrar at Kashmir University, confirmed to the Excelsior that the post’s tenure has come to an end and that they had asked the administration for permission to declare another extension. “We have already given out enough extensions, so we will need administrative approval for one more. We have already requested it and are awaiting confirmation,” he added.
