DODA, Aug 9: District Administration Doda has issued a public advisory announcing the temporary opening of the much-awaited Khellani Tunnel for vehicular movement from August 8, 2025, under a new traffic diversion plan.
According to the order, Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) and passenger vehicles will be allowed to pass through the tunnel without restrictions until the completion of the ongoing road widening works on the old NH-244 (Khellani-Ganpat stretch).
However, heavy vehicles such as trucks, tippers and trailers will be restricted from entering the tunnel and they will continue on the existing alignment. Also their movement will only be permitted at night between 7 pm and 7 am, with halting points fixed at Baggar (Jammu side) and Pul Doda (Doda side).
Officials said that the tunnel has shortened the route by 5 km bypassing an accident-prone stretch that has claimed multiple lives and often caused market disruptions.
Built with modern technology, the tunnel is designed to withstand major risks, promising safer and smoother travel.
The Khellani Tunnel is expected to emerge as a crucial link between Doda, Kishtwar and the Kashmir Valley, boosting connectivity, enhancing safety and supporting economic growth.
