He said that it was a promise the ruling National Conference (NC) had made to the people and the party was duty-bound to uphold it
“People had voted to keep BJP out of power in J&K; it is our responsibility to hold that promise, because NC has taken votes for that during Assembly elections, It is not a favour, it is about sticking and keeping the promise made with people,” Mehdi told reporters at Sonamarg.
Mehdi was reacting to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s recent remark that BJP would “never be allowed to come to power in J&K, even if they (BJP) block the restoration of Statehood.”
On the restoration of the Statehood to J&K as well as the constitutional guarantees, Mehdi said that the demand was “alive” despite the “disappointment” caused by New Delhi’s indifference.
“The struggle of Ladakh is the reflection of what people of J&K feel. People should be heard and their demands must be addressed,” he said.
On the Ladakh situation, Mehdi said that certain sections were initially made to believe that the decisions taken on August 5, 2019, were in their favour.
“They have also come to know that those decisions were not only against the people of Kashmir, but also against the people of Jammu and those from Ladakh,” he said.
The NC leader alleged that for the last five years, Ladakhis had been putting forth their demands, but “through sheer arrogance and carelessness, their struggle was not given the necessary respect and ear.”
He blamed “those in power in Delhi” for ignoring their aspirations.
