Srinagar, Feb 7: With power amnesty already implemented for domestic consumers, the Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) today urged the Government to extend the relief to commercial consumers as well.
In a statement issued here, the KCCI said it has been persistently advocating for this essential measure and has formally submitted a request to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
“While the Government has already implemented power amnesty for domestic consumers, which is currently in force, there is an urgent need to extend similar benefits to the broader commercial sector,” the KCCI stated.
It emphasized that rising electricity charges have placed a significant burden on commercial entities, particularly during a time when Kashmir has faced “severe economic challenges” due to the pandemic.
“The tourism industry, especially hotels, suffered a staggering 90% decline in visitor arrivals during COVID-19. Additionally, various industries and commercial establishments continue to grapple with financial strain,” the KCCI noted.
The trade body acknowledged that while the UT Government has shown a willingness to consider this matter and granted substantial concessions to household consumers in the 2023-24 financial year, “the time has come for the commercial sector to receive equivalent relief measures.”
It further stated that the Government had previously indicated its willingness to consider concessions such as interest waivers and reductions in per kW demand charges for the affected period-a commitment, the KCCI stressed, that requires urgent follow-up.
The KCCI stated that it has raised the necessity of this support in numerous meetings with UT authorities, including a recent discussion with the Chief Minister, Chief Secretary, and other senior officials at the civil secretariat in Srinagar.
“Extending the amnesty would provide crucial support to Kashmir’s entire business community, including those in tourism, industry, and various commercial sectors,” it said.
