JAMMU, July 14: Former Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and ex Speaker of State Assembly, Kavinder Gupta has been appointed as the new Lieutenant Governor of Union Territory of Ladakh.

Former Civil Aviation Minister, Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju was appointed as the Governor of Goa and Professor Ashim Kumar Ghosh will be the new Governor of Haryana, according to an official communiqué issued here on Monday.
The appointments will take effect from the dates they will assume charge of their respective offices, it said.

President, Droupadi Murmu has accepted the resignation of Brigadier (retd) B D Mishra as Lieutenant Governor of Union Territory of Ladakh, it said.
The President is pleased to appoint Kavinder Gupta as the Lt Governor of Ladakh, Raju as the Governor of Goa and Professor Ashim Kumar Ghosh as the new Governor of Haryana, the communiqué said.
Kavinder Gupta a senior BJP leader and an RSS ideologue has taken active part in JP movement in J&K as a student leader and was also jailed during emergency.
Three time Mayor of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC), Kavinder is a down to earth politician, soft spokesperson and easy accessible leader.
A former MLA from Gandhi Nagar constituency, Kavinder Gupta complimented President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister, Narendra Modi and Home Minister, Amit Shah for assigning him this prestigious responsibility.
He also complimented his supporters and party activists who worked shoulder to shoulder with him over the years and said that he will try his best to come up to the expectations of the people of Ladakh region.
Kavinder said that there are many challenges ahead but he will try to find solution to all issues after taking the administration and local leadership of UT into confidence. Maintaining that it is a challenging assignment he said “I will work together with everyone for development of Ladakh”, he added.
He, while recalling his role as JMC Mayor said that there were various groups in the House representing different parties with varied ideologies but he tried his utmost to take every one along and run the House smoothly to best expectations of the people. “As Speaker also I tried to contribute my services to take all parties along to maintain the impartiality and dignity of this prestigious post”, he added.
Former president of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) Kavinder also served as general secretary of State unit of BJP for two consecutive terms from 1993 to 1998.
Kavinder was elected as MLA for the first time from the Gandhi Nagar Assembly constituency in 2014 poll defeating sitting Congress Minister, Raman Bhalla.
Following the BJP-PDP victory in 2014 and two parties forming alliance for Government formation, Kavinder was elected Speaker of State Assembly.
Kavinder, who earlier served as general secretary VHP, spent about 13 months in jail during emergency in Punjab as a RSS activist.
Meanwhile BJP held a function here today to felicitate the appointment of Kavinder Gupta as new LG of Ladakh. The function was attended by large number of party activists, senior leaders and MLAs.
