KATHUA, July 1: Col (retd) Mahan Singh, DDC Chairman Kathua said that upcoming Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) at Basohli will be a game changer for boosting up the agriculture economy of hill region of Kathua district.
While speaking to media persons after the DDC Council meet here, today held at district Headquarters, Col Mahan revealed that second KVK in District Kathua will be established soon under the aegis of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agriculture Science and Technology (SKUAST), Jammu at Plakh in Basohli Sub-District.
Towards this a patch of 130 Kanals of Agriculture land has been identified at Maali, Plakh by the authorities concerned, VC SKUAST Jammu, J.P Sharma along with a team of scientists has also visited the site a couple of months back and subsequently case has been initiated after obtaining the viability and revenue details from DC Kathua. The commitment of opening KVK at Basohli was reiterated by VC SKUAST Jammu during an address to convocation held at SKUAST Jammu on June 28.
The DDC Chairman said that besides giving direct employment to more than a dozen individuals, the Krishi Vigyan Kendra will conduct skill development certification courses for local youth and women involved in self-help groups to promote skills like food processing, fruit growing & its management, animal husbandry & milk products, poultry, mushrooms, organic forming, aromatic/medicinal plants etc.
“The KVK will play key role in promoting conventional crops as well as cash crops, especially considering the need of changing crops pattern in the region due to increasing monkey menace and destruction of crops by wild animals since coming up of Ranjit Sagar Dam which caused submerging of forests alongside riverbeds,” he added.
“Necessity of the proposed KVK has been felt in the region due to different climatic conditions in hilly/semi hill region of District Kathua. The coming up KVK Basohli will have its extension centres functioning in Bani & Billawar for ensuring optimum benefit to farming community in the entire hill region,” Col Mahan said.
The DDC Chairman thanked the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi and Dr Jitendra Singh, MoS PMO for sanctioning the project as BJP Government sincere commitment towards doubling farmers’ income in the district.
