Kathua police joins investigation in Bathinda blast; quizzes suspect, father

JAMMU, Sept 16: Kathua police team has joined investigation in the blasts in a house at village Jeeda in Bathinda district of Punjab recently in which a suspect and his father were injured following reports that the youth, who bought explosives, had booked train ticket for Kathua.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has already joined investigations in the blast along with Punjab Police while help of Army has also been taken to identify nature of the explosives material.
As per the reports, Gurpreet Singh, a young Law student, now a suspect, was injured in blast inside his house at village Jeeda in Bathinda district few days back. Hours later, another blast took place in the house in which his father Gurpreet Singh was also injured.
Gurpreet had reportedly purchased chemicals online and was trying to make bomb when the blast took place. Second explosion occurred after his father tried to remove the material on reaching his house.

Both have been admitted at AIIMS Bathinda.
However, in a twist, local police found that Gurpreet Singh had booked train ticket for Kathua.
Immediately after getting report, a Kathua Police team rushed to Bathinda and joined investigations to ascertain why Gurpreet Singh had booked train ticket for Kathua.
Whether he planned to trigger blast in the train or in Kathua are also subject matters of investigation, the sources said.
They added that teams of the NIA have also reached the spot and have joined investigations with Punjab Police while Army experts were also called for examination of explosives and ascertain their nature.
Preliminary questioning of Gurpreet Singh showed that he appeared to have been radicalized online and purchased chemicals to make explosives and trigger blasts.
“Kathua police team went to Bathinda and visited the spot. They questioned the youth and his father, who are admitted at AIIMS Bathinda. The boy was supposed to visit Kathua due to which there are apprehensions that he was planning a target in the district. Kathua police also inquired about the type of explosive used in the blast,” the sources said.
The window panes of the house broke due to the impact of the blasts while household items also suffered damage.
Gurpreet Singh used to watch radicalized content online. He also used to watch videos pertaining to chemical combinations of explosive material. He ordered some combustible substances online, the sources said, adding while he was trying to handle these materials and prepare some kind of explosive after watching those videos, it resulted in a blast in which Gurpreet suffered injuries, including on his hand and leg.
Gurpreet’s mobile phone has been sent for forensic analysis and his financial trails are also being probed.
