Kashmir witnesses warm days, colder nights

SRINAGAR, Jan 20: The day temperatures across Kashmir today rose by several notches leading to warm days while the night temperatures plummeted further leading to colder nights.
Kashmir witnessed a warm day today with Srinagar’s temperatures soaring to 14.9 degrees Celsius while night temperatures plunged several degrees below normal.
Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 14.9 degrees Celsius which is 8.1 degrees Celsius above normal.
Qazigund recorded a maximum temperature of 14.6 degrees Celsius which is 8.3 degrees Celsius above normal.
Pahalgam recorded a maximum temperature of 9.4 degrees Celsius which is 4.8 degrees Celsius above normal.
Kupwara recorded a maximum temperature of 11.8 degrees Celsius which is 4.5 degrees Celsius above normal.
Kokernag recorded a maximum temperature of 12.0 degrees Celsius which is 7.0 degrees Celsius above normal.
Gulmarg recorded a maximum temperature of 6.5 degrees Celsius which is 6.2 degrees Celsius above normal.
After two days of less harsh night temperatures, the night temperatures across the region plummeted further with Srinagar city recording minus 3.2 degrees Celsius.
Gulmarg ski resort recorded minus 5.4 degree Celsius and Pahalgam minus 6.4 degree Celsius as the minimum temperature.
A Meteorological Department (MeT) statement said, “On January 20 and 21, a generally cloudy sky with possibility of light rain/ snow at scattered places. On January 22, generally cloudy sky with the possibility of light to moderate rain (Plains of Jammu)/snow at many places. Higher reaches of erstwhile Doda district and Pir Panjal Range may also receive light to moderate snow. On January 23, generally cloudy sky with the possibility of light rain (plains of Jammu)/snow at scattered places.”
“Between January 24 and 28, generally dry weather is expected. From January 29 to 31, generally cloudy sky is likely with light rain/snow at isolated places,” the MeT Department further added..
The department issued an advisory saying that the “tourists/travellers/transporters are advised to follow the Admin/Traffic advisory”.
The 40-day long period of harsh winter cold called the ‘Chillai Kalan’ started on December 21 and will end on January 29 after which the weather will start improving gradually in the Valley till the Spring season begins.
